Castel dell'Ovo: The Legend and Beauty of Naples' Symbol

The Castle and its History

Located on the waterfront of Naples, Castel dell'Ovo is one of the city's most famous and evocative monuments. The castle, which takes its name from the legend of the magical egg, is one of the attractions most visited by tourists and Neapolitans alike.
Its history dates back to the Greek and Roman period, when the islet on which the castle was built was used as a tuff quarry. The castle was built in the Norman period, in the 12th century, by order of William the Good. Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous transformations and restorations, becoming a royal residence, a prison and a military barracks. Unfortunately, during World War II, Castel dell'Ovo was heavily damaged by air raids and was then fortunately restored in the 1950s and 1960s.

The Legend of the Magical Egg

According to legend, the castle was built on the site where the poet Virgil had hidden a magical egg that would guarantee the salvation of the city of Naples. Legend has it that if the egg had broken, the city would have been destroyed. Even today, many believe in the existence of the magical egg and its legend is part of the collective imagination of the city.
This explains the reason for the name of the Castle.

The Beauty of Castel dell'Ovo!

Castel dell'Ovo is not just a legend, it is also an architectural wonder. The castle stands on a tuff islet and overlooks the sea.
